Pearl in a Petri Dish: Poetry, Gifted, and the Visual-Spatial Learner
Advanced Placement student Natalie K. told me, “Poetry writing moves you to think about your ideas.” This book pledges a method to open students to an advance of learning and emotional insight. Poetry, personal and scholastic, induces a strong sense of who they are and what they know. Visual-spatial people may feel, in an auditory-sequential field, that education is like harsh labor under harness in their lives. They think in pictures. They rely on images to experience, to learn, to express. Poetry is a perfect provider. Let us – teachers, parents, counselors et al – spark their passion. Let’s open their intellectual promise. I wrote this book for all those people hoping for student excellence.
Bruce H Allen, author
The author encourages his students, and now his readers, to have fun with poetry! In his own expressive style, Bruce Allen presents the poetry of many of his students he coached to let their imagination run free in expressing their concerns, their emotions, and their answers to the question: Who am I? Throughout, Bruce shows readers the power of poetry and the emotional quotient to open minds and influence lives. This delightful book will charm you, enlighten you, and inspire you to think imagery, think metaphor, and think about poetry in a more meaningful, innovative, and out-of-the-box manner.

Eloquent, engaging, and instructive, Pearl in a Petri Dish illustrates in detail how instructors — at all levels and in all disciplines — can enhance learning through encouraging poetic response to material under study. Offering a variety of poems and poetic forms, Allen explains how using poetry to respond to content material can help learners of all types, but especially visual/spatial and gifted learners, to engage with and respond to the material at a deeper, more complex level than traditional prose responses allow. As a high school and university instructor myself, I wish this book had been available twenty-five years ago. — Richard Argys. Retired High School Teacher and Senior Instructor Emeritus, University of CO Denver
